Spooky Reads

In keeping my with vow to squeeze every last drop of goodness from this fall - I've been making my way through some great spooky reads.

I love a scary book.

And there's no better time for creepy literature than October, yes?

First up,  The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, a 1959 scary classic. This book is great. Fabulously suspenseful and creepy. I could not get my nose out of it.

This book requires no blood-and-guts to scare you, Ms. Jackson weaves a serious web of foreboding. I knew something very, very bad was about to happen - though I had no idea exactly what. (And I couldn't wait to find out).

This one's a psychological thriller - and I for one, loved it.

Next up, Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill. This is one of the scariest books I have ever read. And for those of you who don't know my predilections, I've read every scary book out there. King, Straub, Koontz, Patterson, EA Poe - the list goes on - I've read 'em all. But this one, my friends, this one gave me chills.
A rock'n'roll legend is haunted by the vengeful ghost of a former girlfriend's father. It doesn't sound that scary when I sum it up like that - but man-oh-man - this one's a doozy.
Relentlessly suspenseful, and full of the stuff that bad dreams are made of.
Well written and never over-the-top, the horrors are wonderfully believable.
It will make you pause before you buy anything off Ebay again. Mwah-ha ha ha.

Finally, Dead Until Dark: A Sookie Stackhouse Novel. No worries, this one's not scary at all. Here we are again, Melissa? Yes, another vampire love story. It's not my fault - they're everywhere. This is the first book in the series the HBO show True Blood is based on.
It's good, quite good actually. Despite the fact that the main character's name is Sookie.
A wee bit scary, a touch of murder-mystery, a bit romantic and sexy.
The best piece of literature I've ever read? No. But will I be reading the rest of the books in the series? Oh yes indeed. And I'll also be renting the DVDs for the HBO show, too.

Now, what are you reading?
